Rob Carr, ex-Rockstar, reveals that GTA 6 will bring experiments and mechanics that weren't finalized in GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2!

In an interview with the Kiwi Talkz podcast, Rob Carr, a former audio designer at Rockstar Games, explained that GTA 6 (Grand Theft Auto VI) is likely to incorporate a number of experimental features.

These technologies and mechanics were tested during the development of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, but never made it into the final version because they were "ahead of their time."

According to Carr, Rockstar’s creative process involves a massive amount of testing. He revealed that he knows of ideas and mechanics planned for GTA 5 that the team “never got to finish” due to the hardware limitations of the time (PS3/Xbox 360).

"I know of a few things we experimented with and… there are elements of that I’m really looking forward to seeing what they’ll do [in GTA 6]," said Carr. The bet is that Rockstar has refined these old ideas, now with the power of the current generation, to turn them into revolutionary features.

Carr suggests that what we currently consider minor features in GTA 5 could become the heart of the next game. He believes that certain interactions or open-world systems will be expanded to become central mechanics in Vice City.

"There will be things in GTA 5 that they’ll have in GTA 6, and you’ll look at them and say, ‘I saw that coming, that was really clever," the designer said. This reinforces the theory that Rockstar uses its previous releases as a massive "testing ground" for what’s to come.

The mechanical evolution across Rockstar’s franchises is cyclical. Just as the Dead Eye slow-motion system from the first Red Dead became the special abilities of Michael, Franklin, and Trevor in GTA 5.

In short, Carr is convinced that the absurd level of detail, physics, and NPC interaction in Red Dead Redemption 2 will be the fundamental foundation of GTA 6. "I’d be surprised if they didn’t use something from Red Dead 2," he concluded.
