The impossible has happened: Starfield has arrived on the PlayStation 5. But beyond the surprise of the release, the community’s big question is: how does Bethesda’s RPG perform on Sony’s hardware—specifically on the standard PS5 and PS5 Pro? YouTuber ElAnalistaDeBits has done the comparison, and we’re going to discuss it!

How did Starfield run on the PlayStation 5?

Resolution and Framerate: The Victory of Smoothness

The first major difference becomes apparent as soon as we look at the frame rate. The base PS5 offers two distinct paths, while the PS5 Pro raises the bar:

  • PS5 Quality: Delivers 2160p (4K with 1440p upscaling via FSR) targeting 40 FPS, ideal for those seeking fidelity on 120Hz TVs and monitors.
  • PS5 Performance: Aims for 60 FPS, but with a noticeably lower base resolution (ranging from 900p to 1080p), resulting in a smoother image, though with more jagged edges.
  • PS5 Pro (Enhanced Mode): This is the sweet spot. Thanks to the use of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), the Pro delivers an extremely sharp 4K image while maintaining superior performance, ranging between 70 and 80 FPS in open and populated areas.

Shadows and Lighting

When analyzing the shadows on the ground and the contours of the spacesuit, the PS5 Pro demonstrates slightly more refined rendering. The shadows on the base PS5 have edges with more artifacts and suffer from a slight "flicker" effect when in motion.

On the PS5 Pro, contact shadows are much denser and more stable. Additionally, ambient occlusion (the shadows in those corners) in indoor environments is much cleaner on the Pro, eliminating the gray graininess that sometimes appears on the base version.

PSSR vs FSR

The biggest difference noted in the video is the image reconstruction method. Starfield is a game rich in minute details, such as various panels, wires, vegetation, and more. On the standard PS5, FSR sometimes leaves "ghosting" behind the character, a notable flaw of FSR.

On the PS5 Pro, however, PSSR’s use of Artificial Intelligence cleans up these imperfections, delivering texture sharpness that closely resembles native 4K seen on high-performance PCs, especially in the level of detail (LOD) of rocks and surfaces.

Geometry and Level of Detail (LOD)

While walking across planetary surfaces, we noticed that the PS5 Pro maintains the complexity of rocks and bushes at greater distances. While on the PS5 you can notice a slight pop-in of grass as the character runs, the Pro maintains a much denser and more stable landscape on the horizon.

Starfield looks great on both console models. If you’re just looking for the story experience, the base PS5 in 40 FPS mode delivers a solid and beautiful result.

However, the PS5 Pro takes Starfield to the next level, as it is the only console capable of offering high visual clarity combined with smooth frame rates consistently above 60 FPS most of the time. But regardless of the version, fun and exploration are guaranteed.
