The current generation of consoles is rewriting the rules of the market in a way that is frustrating for gamers: hardware, especially the PlayStation 5 (PS5), is becoming more expensive over time.
Sony recently implemented the third price increase for the PlayStation 5 in Japan, and the consumer reaction was immediate, resulting in a sharp drop in sales.

According to weekly data (March 30–April 5, 2026) released by the Gematsu website, total sales of the PS5 family fell by nearly 6,000 units compared to the previous week.

PS5 is overtaken by the Nintendo Switch 2

The situation wasn’t a total disaster thanks to one crucial detail:
- Sony’s Lifeline: The PS5 Digital sold 12,141 units. The reason was that it was the only model to escape the price hike in Japan this round.
- The Impact of the Price Hike: Models affected by the new price stagnated. The PS5 Pro sold just 840 units, and the base model with a disc drive managed a meager 558 units sold.
- Nintendo on Top: While Sony deals with the backlash against the new prices, the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to run roughshod over the competition, leading the pack by a wide margin with 59,543 units sold for the week.
For fans and the market, the message is clear: interest in the PlayStation ecosystem exists but has waned; after all, Japanese consumers refuse to pay the inflated price.

Although the rise in electronic component prices justifies Sony’s move, the final price tag is driving players away—a dangerous situation at a time when Nintendo is launching new hardware in full force.
