In an unexpected move, the Sega has just launched a new Sonic the Hedgehogbut this time, no electrifying races or fast-paced platforming. The new title, called Sonic Blitz, is a turn-based mobile card game - and yes, you read that right: cards.
Initially launched on a limited basis in the Philippines, Sonic Blitz bets on an unprecedented formula for the franchise. Instead of focusing on the frenetic speed that made the character iconic, the game requires tactical thinking and strategic deck-building with characters from the universe Sonic.
How does the new Sonic card game work?

Available to view in stores Google Play and Apple App Store, Blitz brings an experience focused on tactical combat in two battle lanes. Each player can deploy up to four cards per lane, using characters such as Sonic, Amyand even lesser-known figures such as Marine the Raccoon.

Each card has unique attack, defense and special abilities. The big difference lies in the "dash" mechanic, which allows you to deal extra damage at the end of the turn - an attempt by the Sega to maintain the essence of speed, even in a slower, more calculated format.
Despite the bold proposal, the game still has no official global release date, which increases the climate of expectation (and suspicion) among fans.
Sonic changes course while other titles have yet to arrive

In recent years, the franchise has undergone a revitalization. The live-action films have been box office hits, and games like Shadow Generations and CrossWorld (scheduled for 2025) keep the brand on the rise.
Meanwhile, the long-awaited Rumbledeveloped by Rovio Entertainment (from Angry Birds), had its release postponed again. But here's the surprise: Rovio was already working on Sonic Blitz at the same time, which reveals an aggressive strategy by the Sega in the mobile market.
Even with an unusual genre, Sonic Blitz could be the missing piece to keep fans engaged until the next big title. It remains to be seen whether players will embark on this new phase or whether nostalgia will speak louder.
